Feature: World Laureates’ Forum, Lingang October 2022

Professor Barry Sharpless, the American chemist was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry this week, along with colleagues Caroline Ruth Bertosi, Morton Medal for their work in click chemistry and orthogonality Contributions to chemical research. This is the second time he has won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, the first being in 2001.

Professor Sharpless is affiliated with Scripps Research in the US, which advances scientific understanding, educates the scientists of tomorrow and impacts human health across the globe. He has deep feelings for Shanghai, and it is understood that he will participate in the 5th World Top Scientists Forum taking place in Shanghai. This prestigious event runs from 30th October to 3rd November and is a major aspect of the work of the World Laureates Forum now opened in ingang, Shanghai.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 is about making difficult processes easier. The winners have laid the foundation for a functional form of chemistry – click chemistry – in which molecular building blocks snap together quickly and efficiently.
“This year’s Prize in Chemistry deals with not overcomplicating matters, instead working with what is easy and simple. Functional molecules can be built even by taking a straightforward route,” says Johan Åqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry.
Professor Sharples once said: “My ideas that don’t work can always inspire more ideas, and the word failure has been deleted from my spiritual dictionary. If you say, I am more creative than most chemists. There are more surprises, and that’s because I try everything I can.”
